A Guide for UC San Diego & SDSU Students
If you’re living in San Diego, chances are you’ve seen a flyer on campus, a post on Instagram, or maybe even had a buddy mention sperm donation as a real way to earn extra cash. At San Diego Sperm Bank, we’re here to tell you: it’s legit, it’s meaningful, and yes—it pays well. But it’s also so much more than a side hustle.
Whether you’re a student at UC San Diego, San Diego State University, or a young professional building your career in the city, becoming a sperm donor is a unique way to support families in need—while gaining health insights and pocketing a solid monthly income.
As more individuals and couples turn to fertility clinics to start families, the demand for healthy, reliable sperm donors has never been higher. But here’s the truth: our standards are strict, and only about 1% of applicants make it into the program.
So what does it take to qualify? Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering applying to San Diego Sperm Bank.
Who Can Apply?
We’re looking for applicants who meet these requirements:
- You’re between 18 and 39 years old
This is the ideal range for reproductive health. Many of our donors are undergrads, grad students, or young professionals balancing life near La Jolla, Pacific Beach, or Downtown San Diego. - You live a generally healthy lifestyle
We’re not asking you to be a marathon runner or a meal-prep guru. But we do expect candidates who stay active, eat decently, avoid smoking, and steer clear of heavy drug or alcohol use. Healthy lifestyles equal healthier samples. - You live near San Diego
Our lab is located conveniently in the city, and donors are expected to visit in person regularly. If you’re studying at UCSD, SDSU, or even living in Mission Valley or Hillcrest, it’s easy to work visits into your weekly routine.
The Screening Process: What to Expect
Becoming a donor isn’t an overnight approval – it is detailed because we prioritize the health of donors, families, and future children.
Here’s what it involves:
- Comprehensive Personal & Family Questionnaire
You’ll share your health history, education, family background, and lifestyle habits. This builds the foundation for your donor profile. - Physical Exam & Sample Testing
You’ll undergo a complete physical exam, provide blood and urine samples, and, of course, your sperm will be analyzed for count, motility, and quality. - Genetic Screening
This is one of the hidden perks—donors receive a genetic panel that many say is worth the application alone. It’s valuable health information most people never get tested for. - In-Person Interview & Final Evaluation
You’ll meet with our team to discuss your motivations, ask questions, and confirm your commitment.
Real Talk: How Much Can You Earn?
Once you’re approved, you can donate up to three times per week. Each approved donation earns $100, which adds up to around $1,500 per month.
That kind of money can help cover textbooks at SDSU, rent near Pacific Beach, gas for road trips, or even help pay down loans. Some donors put it toward building savings or funding side projects.
But beyond the money, remember the impact—you’re giving families the chance to grow, something many can’t achieve without the help of donors.
What’s the Time Commitment?
We ask donors to commit to at least six months in the program, with at least one donation per week. Consistency matters—especially for families who may want the same donor if they plan for siblings.
For students in San Diego, it’s easy to schedule around classes or work shifts. Many donors say weekly visits fit naturally into their routines.
How Long Does Approval Take?
From application to final approval, the process takes about 3–4 weeks. It includes multiple steps and visits to our clinic, but our staff makes it as smooth as possible.
Patience is part of the journey, but the outcome is a meaningful, flexible way to earn while helping others in a life-changing way.
Is This a Good Fit for You?
You might be a great candidate if:
- You’re 18–39 years old and live in or near San Diego, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Hillcrest, or North Park.
- You’re in good health and open to learning more about your reproductive and genetic wellness.
- You’re interested in consistent income with a meaningful purpose.
- You’re reliable and open to a 6–12 month commitment.
Whether you’re taking classes at UCSD, working downtown, or just looking for something more meaningful than another delivery app gig, sperm donation could be the right move.
