What Motivates Someone to Be a Sperm Donor?

Like other living tissue donations, including liver, kidney, blood, and bone marrow, sperm donations offer a chance for life. Seattle Sperm Bank families would not be able to grow without our donors and we are so grateful for their generosity. But what drives someone to become a donor at SSB? To find out, we asked some men in our program why they chose to donate sperm.

One of the men, donor #14057, said he donates to “help bring happiness to others that cannot otherwise have a family.”

Marcellus, donor #12394, is sympathetic to the fertility conditions that drove clients to use a sperm bank in the first place. “This is an easy way to give back and help people struggling with fertility,” he said.

Of course, being able to meet your financial needs is also important, and SSB is happy to be able to support donors with added income. Rockwell, donor #14034, initially became a donor because he was looking for ways to help make ends meet. After joining the program, he also begin to understand the bigger significance of donating and what it means to so many people.

“I spend a lot of time working the gig economy (Lyft, Uber Eats, dog-walking and grocery-delivery),” he said. “The donor program is a great way for me to get some extra spending money between shifts. But I didn’t realize before how needed donors are. I’m happy to provide this blessing to couples in need.”
