Joining the sperm donor program at San Diego Sperm Bank not only provides treatment options for waiting families but also can be a source of extra income and health benefits.
The application process can take some time, so we are going to break down the requirements and steps to joining the donor program.
Getting started is easy with our online application. We ask some quick questions about you and get your contact information. When you finish you should receive an email where you can schedule your first visit. After completing your online application, you can visit the lab during any open hours to complete your semen analysis, even without an appointment.
Samples collected during the application process are not used for treatment and will be discarded. Semen samples can vary from day to day, so regardless of the results, you will typically be asked to submit a second test sample on another day. Scheduling is easy and flexible, and appointments are around 20-30 mins. We will send you all the information needed to prepare for your visit, but do not hesitate to contact the Donor Coordinator if you have additional questions or need accommodations (info@sandiegospermbank.com).
We will ask about your medical history and your family medical history. Our Genetic Counselors will be looking to reduce the risk of future offspring having any adverse genetic conditions. Our Genetic Counselors will review the documents and approve you for the last step in the application process.
On the day of your physical, we will also take a blood draw. This will be the first day you are welcome to start donating and receive your first payment!
We have an age limit because sperm quality can decline over time. We want to make sure the donations being provided are well suited for treatment purposes.
People who rely on sperm donations to provide treatment options come from all backgrounds. To provide a beneficial service for all who need it, we need to have a donor program that consists of donors from all different ethnicities. We are also looking for all characteristics, like short and tall heights, redheads, and men who wear glasses.
Intended parents want to know all about you. Since both genetic and environmental factors shape who you are, your occupation and educational background are points of interest. You must have a high school diploma or GED to apply. And it is encouraged to have a college degree as well or be in progress. And since not all professions require a college degree, working professionals are also welcome to apply.
All donations are held in quarantine for 6 months. At the end of 6 months, we will do a STI testing that will release the donations in quarantine. We will need you to be available for this step in 6 months, otherwise the donations will not qualify for release for treatment.
Each qualifying donation is compensated. Earn $100 per donation and donate up to 3 times per week.
Donors are welcome to drop in and complete donations as they have time in their schedule. We ask that donors try to visit at least once per week. But as vacation and holidays come up, donors often take a short break and return when they are available on a routine basis.
Donors receive routine health physicals and STI testing. Donors also receive genetic carrier screening for 502 different genetic conditions.
Sperm donors help a wide range of individuals and couples, start, and expand their families. Sperm donations provide crucial treatment options for patients with male factor infertility, LGBTQIA+ couples, and single parents by choice.
There is a huge need for sperm donors, so if you or someone you know are interested in becoming a sperm donor at San Diego Sperm Bank, you can get started by applying today. You can read more about what others who have joined the program have to say here.
